European pilchard

The European pilchard is the only species that may be marketed unqualified as 'sardines' in the European Union under Council Regulation (EEC) No 2136/89.

About the fish

• Ranges from the northeast Atlantic, along the coasts of Europe and northwest Africa, into the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
• A small pelagic schooling fish, commonly around 15-20 cm and reaching roughly 25 cm in length.
• Under EU Regulation (EEC) No 2136/89, only Sardina pilchardus may be labelled simply as 'sardines' when canned; related species require a qualifying name.
• Young fish are often sold fresh as 'sardines' while larger adults are traditionally called 'pilchards' in the UK.
• One of the most economically important small pelagic species for European and Moroccan canning industries.
